Champaign County, Illinois Inmate Search

Inmate searches in Champaign County, Illinois, retrieve charge, booking, and other information about people who may have been confined or released from the Champaign County Jail. Oversight of this detention facility falls under the purview of the local Sheriff’s Office (CCSO). The Sheriff manages the jail’s day-to-day operations, ensuring the security and welfare of the incarcerated population. This means that any inquiry regarding a Champaign County inmate is handled by the Sheriff’s department.

The Champaign County Jail is the principal housing facility for all adult detainees. Municipal police agencies, such as the Champaign and Urbana PDs, may bring individuals to their headquarters or precincts for initial processing or questioning. However, if the suspected offender is not immediately released, they are accommodated at the Champaign County Jail, pending the legal proceedings.

Juvenile offenders, on the other hand, generally pass through a different justice system, with the primary detention site being the Champaign County Juvenile Detention Center, or the Youth Assessment Center (YAC) for diversion and assessment when the juvenile does not meet the legal thresholds for secure detention.

Notwithstanding, following the Illinois Juvenile Court Act of 1987 (705 ILCS 405/) and Administrative Order 2009-02, minors subject to adult criminal court jurisdiction (i.e., those excluded from the Juvenile Court’s jurisdiction) may be housed in county jails rather than juvenile detention centers while awaiting trial, but they must be separated by "sight and sound" from the adult population.

Finally, a person arrested in Champaign County may not necessarily remain in county custody after their case is concluded.

  • An adult serving a long-term sentence may be transferred to a state prison operated by the Illinois Department of Corrections (IDOC). In which case, the search should be conducted through IDOC.
  • Further, certain individuals may be processed within the federal justice system, and their information should be sourced from the Federal Bureau of Prisons, as county or state officials will be unable to provide relevant records.
  • Even so, a juvenile sentenced for a serious or violent crime may end up in an Illinois Youth Center (IYC) managed by the Illinois Department of Juvenile Justice (IDJJ).
